Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
